Thankfulness! Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation

Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Psalm 68:19

This past month my family experienced tremendous blessings from the Lord. These blessings were something for which we had fervently prayed and longed to receive. Consequently, when He answered our requests, we noticed the blessings immediately. In fact, we couldn't have missed them for trying! Our hearts have been lifted up in praise and thanksgiving in response to the benefits He has bestowed upon us.

But Psalm 68:19 tells us that the Lord daily loadeth us with benefits. Daily! Not just once a year, once a month, or even once a week. Not only in response to the earnest prayers of our hearts - praise Him for those answers! But He daily outpours blessings upon us.

And the verse just gets better yet. He daily loadeth us with benefits. Loads! He doesn't just hand out a little bit each day - but instead He loads us right up to overflowing each and every day of our lives! Although the word "load" often creates an image of something burdensome, that is not what God's load is like. Picture instead someone at your door with a load of gifts! This welcoming scene is similar to God's load of benefits. I've pictured God with a wheelbarrow overflowing with feathers. Continually throughout the day He gently tips up the wheelbarrow a little more and little more allowing the feathers to softly flutter down all around us. All day long, blessing, after blessing, after blessing. He daily loadeth us with benefits.

Am I noticing?

Are you noticing?

Or, are we so taken up with daily life, our "to do" lists, and pressures and troubles, that we miss seeing His benefits? Are we earnestly praying for some need and yet at the same time neglect to notice what He is already doing for us? Or, are we so enjoying life that we've forgotten that every good gift and every perfect gift is from above (James 1:17) and that a man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven (John 3:27)? What would we think of His benefits if perhaps for just one day everything good that surrounded us was taken away? Would we become more aware of His blessings then? Remember the warning of Moses to the Israelites... "when thou shalt have eaten and be full; Then beware lest thou forget the LORD." (Deuteronomy 6:11-12).

But what is amazing to me is that whether we notice His load of benefits or not, His loads don't stop! He doesn't only bless those that thank Him. He doesn't only bless those that love Him. Matthew 5:45 tells us that he makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. Oh what a God of unconditional love! He blesses each and every one of His creatures each and every day with an overflowing load of benefits!

Oh, thanks be to the Lord for answers to the blessings we've been praying for. Praise Him for the response we've longed for and have graciously received from His hand. But may we never overlook the benefits that He loads upon us daily - everywhere we turn, every step we take. May our hearts lift in thanksgiving to our God, even the God of our salvation, as the Psalmist did and...

Bless the LORD, O my soul:

and all that is within me,

bless his holy name.

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

Who forgiveth all thine iniquities;

who healeth all thy diseases;

Who redeemeth thy life from destruction;

who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things;

so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Psalms 103:1-5

May we do as the familiar tune says, along with the change someone has suggested…

Count your blessings,

Name them ton by ton.

Count your blessings see what God has done.

Count your blessings,

Name them ton by ton.

And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

Oh, let us sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with us! (Psalm 13:6)
