Pre-eminent Christ - that in all things He might have the pre-eminence. Colossians 1:18

And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead;

that in all things he might have the pre-eminence.

Colossians 1:18

All things.

Who knows better than we, in our generation, about all things? Just take a look around. Things, things and more things fill our eyes. We have more material things than any generation has ever had. In fact, most of us have accumulated more things than we have time for. And, the things don't stop there. Take a look at our lives. It seems that no matter where we turn and regardless of how much we do today there are always more things to do tomorrow. As we've often heard, our modern technology is supposed to make our lives easier, leaving us with more time but the opposite is true with us. We seem busier than any generation has ever been.

So many little time.

And, in the middle of all these things, where is our Lord Jesus?

In all things, He is to have the pre-eminence. Does He?

We all have responsibilities. We all have things that we must attend to. Our children need us. Our spouse does too. Our work demands we be there. Our homes require work and upkeep. Our parents need our help. The weekly Bible study is on Thursday night and we must prepare our Sunday school lesson. The children need to be driven to soccer. Our work deadline is in a week. Someone has to prepare supper and fill the van with gas. We need to keep in touch with our friends...

And all these things that fill our lives are not "bad". We are to work putting our heart into our responsibilities. But where does our Lord fit into our busy lives?

In all things, He is to have the pre-eminence. Does He?

Are we spending quality, unhurried time with Him daily or has that been slipping? Are we getting up early so we can spend time with Him or so we can get a head start on all the things that need to be done that day? Do we have any downtime to ponder, meditating on Him or is our only downtime when we flop into bed at night? It happens so subtly sometimes. Our regular time alone with Him is skipped one day because of something "urgent". The next day is a marathon from the minute we step out of bed and before we know it, days have passed.

Whoa. Stop. Something is wrong. Things are coming before Him.

In fact, it's worse. He is the Giver of all things. It is He who has given us richly all things to enjoy (1 Timothy 6:17).

But now... our things from the Giver are taking precedence over the Giver of our things.

Psalms 42:8 says, Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. Colossians 3:4 also says, When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Our God is to be our life. Our Lord Jesus Christ is to have the pre-eminence.

All my things are not to come first - He is!

Is He?

If He is not first then some things have to go!

It's one or the other. My things or Him.

Stop and closely evaluate. Whatever thing is demoting the Giver of all things - fix it! No, don't get rid of your kids (!) but yes, maybe even that Bible-related activity needs to go. Make changes. Delegate. Say no. Allow less to be enough. Stop. Whatever it is, do something about it.

Make sure that in all your things He has the pre-eminence!
