Ordered Steps: The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. Psalm 37:23
July 10, 2014
Another year is over. 2010 has now begun. Hard to believe, isn’t it?
For some reason, I had to reset the date on my computer and the only way it allowed me to do so was to scroll forward through each month of the past year, from January to December 2009, until I finally reached January 2010. As each monthly calendar flipped by in front of me I was overwhelmed and convicted. Where has the time gone? Look at all those months and, even more incredible, each of those 365 individual days. How could they possibly have gone by so quickly? What did I do during all those days and months? I hardly seem to remember! God blessed me with an entire year and it is now gone. Did I spend my time profitably? Was the Lord pleased with my walk before Him during the past 12 months?
Psalm 37 gives us encouraging words…
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD:
and he delighteth in his way.
Did you see that? He delighteth in his way. During the past year, as I allowed the Lord to order my steps and when I followed His truths, He took great pleasure in me. Proverbs 11:20 also says, “such as are upright in their way are his delight.” and Proverbs 15:8 tells us “the prayer of the upright is his delight.”
But what about the times when I know I didn’t do so well? Times when I did not obey Him like I should have. Times when I chose to live selfishly for myself instead of for Him. The sin I committed. The rebellion that arose in my heart. The times I ordered my own steps instead of allowing Him to guide them. What about then?
Psalm 37 continues into the next verse saying…
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down:
for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.
What about then? Although I fell, and the Lord could not take delight in me at those times, He did not let go. I was not utterly cast down for the LORD upheld me with His hand. Thank you Lord for never letting go. Thank you for lifting me up when I stumbled and for helping me rise up when I fell.
Thank you for the words in John 10.
I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish,
neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all;
and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
What security. What peace we have in knowing that He’ll never let us go. No man – ourselves included – can take us out of our Lord Jesus’ hand, neither from the hand of God the Father. If that isn’t double security, what is?
All of us have probably started out this New Year with great resolutions and aspirations. We’ve looked back over the past 12 months and have desired to do better this year. We’ve determined to allow Him to order our steps in a greater way than we did in 2009. This kind of reflection and evaluation is good and yet we know that no matter how strong our resolve, we will not be able to keep our resolutions perfectly. Micah knew this and he said…
…when I fall, I shall arise;
when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.
…he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness.
Although we wish it to be untrue, it is certain that we will fall. Micah does not say if I fall, but when I fall. But as certain as this fact is, we can also say the opposite with absolute assurance: when I fall I will arise for the Lord upholds me with His hand. He will bring me forth to the light and I shall behold His righteousness.
What a guarantee. What a reason to never give up! Oh, praise Him, praise Him cheerfully!!
2009 has gone by. 2010 is before us. None of us have gone this way before and we have no idea what the future holds. But as we seek to walk each day that is given to us with our hand in His and allow Him to order our steps, may we take comfort in the fact that He delights in us. Think of it! Isn’t it incredible that we can bring the God of Heaven pleasure? But may we also be assured that when we fall, as it is certain we will, our hearts can confidently say with Micah, Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise… for the Lord upholds me with His hand. He will bring me forth to the light and I shall behold His righteousness.
May we seek Him daily and allow Him to order our steps. May our desire be to bring Him delight this whole year through!
