A Simple To-Do List: Do Justly, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly Micah 6:8
July 10, 2014
I have a book entitled; I Wish I Could Be More. Below the title 5 words scroll across the cover: Patient, Unselfish, Forgiving, Disciplined and Loving. I don't know where the book came from, however, every time I see the spine on my shelf and its "I Wish I Could Be More" title, the opposite feeling arises in my heart. "No", I cry, "I do not wish I could be more of anything!" The title turns me off every time.
Why? Because I have so much to work on spiritually speaking. And in fact, patience, unselfishness, forgiveness, discipline and love are exactly the things I need to work on. So why don't I pick up the book and see what the author, Poppy Smith, has to say?
Because I don't want to add any more to my list of "Things to Work On". Maybe you're different than me (hopefully so!), but my list of such things is unending. In addition to the above 5, I also need to be more: joyful, longsuffering, faithful, giving, self-controlled, meek, encouraging, prayerful, compassionate, helpful... (Does anyone have more paper, please?) Me, wishing I could be more? Forget it!
And then I came across this verse.
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6:8
Wait a minute. What does the Lord require of me? More things to work on? No. Read the verse again. He has shown you what is good. He has shown what He requires of you.
Did you catch them?
Love Mercy Walk Humbly
Just 3 things. Hmmm... I think I can handle three. How about you?
Do Justly Do what is right. Be righteous. Obey divine commands. Be holy in heart.
Love Mercy Be mild and tenderhearted. Overlook injuries and injustices. Treat an offender better than he or she deserves.
Walk Humbly Recognize our own weakness and be continually aware of the grace God has shown to us. Be unselfish, thinking of others first, without any pride or high-mindedness. Be submissive to the divine will of God.
Do Justly Love Mercy Walk Humbly
How's that for a new "Things to Work On" list? I don't know about your previous list but this one is sure a lot shorter than mine was! And what now? Can we just forget about our earlier pages and concentrate on these 3 things? Well, focus is the key. An endless list is unfocused and discouraging. But three short points? I'd say that's focused, precise and almost attainable. Do Justly. Love Mercy. Walk Humbly. Centre on these three and, rather than tossing out your old list of "Things to Work On", you will find yourself doing the very things you had scribbled on those endless sheets of paper in the first place.
All the while, may we keep looking to our Ultimate Example. Although He states exactly what He requires of us, He does not ask us to do anything He isn't Himself.
Do Justly He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. Deuteronomy 32:4
Love Mercy But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth. Psalms 86:15
Walk Humbly Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: Matthew 11:29
I can of mine own self do nothing... I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. John 5:30
Focus. Don't get bogged down looking for some more paper. What does God require of you and me?
